A Lion’s Tale: Around the World in Spandex by Chris Jericho

A Lion’s Tale: Around the World in Spandex is a book by Chris Jericho that covers his rise from a young kid who loved wrestling in rock-and-roll to becoming one of the greatest professional wrestlers in the world.

Chris Jericho is considered one of the fifty greatest wrestlers of all time. In 2001, he became the first undisputed champion of both WWE and WCW. Amazon says he’s retired, which is not true, but this is still his memoir that tells the story of his wrestling career. The book describes his journey from his childhood dreams all the way to the WWF.

The book begins with Jericho having a flashback right before his WWF debut. As he names all the people he encountered on his journey, the story begins as he talks about the first time he ever watched wrestling. He uses that story to show how his dream of becoming a professional wrestler started.

He talks about always trying to talk to the wrestlers as a kid and shares a story about a wrestler he bothered so often that they yelled “Shut up kid, or I’ll slap your face!” Then he talks about how he and his friend would ask to use their gym teacher’s PortaPit, which was like a very large and thick mattress, and put on shows. He explained that they would plan out every match for every show and act as the characters.

The book continues to describe his experience in wrestling school and Smoky Mountain Wrestling. It talks about his adventures in Mexico, Germany, Knoxville, Japan, Philadelphia, Atlanta and finally, New York. The book builds to his WWF debut in 2000 and how he views it as the culmination of his career. The end of the book sets the stage for his WWE career as well as his next book.
